Northcote Laneway House is a compact, considered home designed for a young family of four, nestled into a former backyard site fronting a quiet laneway in Northcote. The 14m x 14m corner block, cleverly carved from an existing residential lot offered unique opportunities and challenges, including tight planning restrictions and a modest budget.
The brief called for a bold, mid-century inspired design with expressive use of colour and materials. The resulting home is arranged in an L-shaped plan around a central north-facing courtyard, creating a private garden oasis and allowing natural light to filter deep into the interiors.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can unlock the potential of small, unconventional sites—transforming overlooked spaces into functional, vibrant family homes.
